一陣子沒有聽Belle & Sebastian了，記得以前播放《If You’re Feeling Sinister》的專輯時，陶醉在主唱Stuart的歌聲之中，他略帶害羞的氣質，旋律雖然輕快，歌詞中總是帶點哀傷。
Belle
& Sebastian來自蘇格蘭的格拉斯哥(Glasgow)，樂團之中沒有Belle，也沒有Sebastian，是一支編制很大的樂團，於1995年成立，當時的年輕成員都是來自於Stow College的同學，其中包括：Stuart
Murdoch(吉他，主唱)、Stuart David(貝斯手，後來離團，成立Looper樂隊)、Sarah Martin(小提琴與女聲)、Steve Jackson(吉他手，也擔任vocal的部分)、Chris Geddes(鍵盤手)、Richard
Colburn(鼓手)與Mick Cooke(小喇叭手)。
雖然編制很大，音樂卻相當簡單，從他們對於Bob
Dylan的崇敬來看，多少受到其民謠搖滾(folk-rock)的影響。在民謠的風格中，又有點chamber pop的別緻風味，身處蘇格蘭的Belle &
Sebastian，或許還受到了北方靈歌的影響(northern soul)。
團名來自法國的兒童影集，Belle & Sebastian 是一個男孩和狗成長的故事，成長雖然是好事，但不一定充滿開心的事，開心之中也會有一些悲傷，Belle & Sebastian的音樂也是如此，親切沒有距離，卻又感性的烙印在心中。
帶點民謠的曲風，卻總是令人耳目一新，編曲雖然華麗，卻具備清新的特質，應該和團員們的年輕心態有關吧！雖然已經出道將近二十年，團員們都已經是中年人了，卻始終帶點青春芬芳的氣息。
Belle &
Sebastian的歌曲特殊之處，或許在於他們巧妙地將不同的樂器融合在一起，一首歌曲除了一般搖滾樂團的吉他、貝斯、鼓和鍵盤之外，還有小喇叭、木琴、長笛、小提琴、大提琴或是打擊樂器。
來自蘇格蘭的傳統，使我想起早逝的蘇格蘭民謠歌手Nick Drake，纖細、害羞又敏感的靈魂。
Belle &
Sebastian歌曲主題十分貼近生活，是愛情的感觸、是夢境無意識的紀錄、是對於無奈生活的浪漫幻想，在〈I Didn't
See It Coming〉唱著想去旅行卻沒錢，那就心轉境轉，不要搭飛機、改搭火車吧！沒有車，就租一台吧！小提琴手Sarah Martin輕柔的嗓子，可愛輕鬆的編曲，浪漫的幻想：

每一首歌都是生活的一則小故事、一段觸及人心的生活札記、一個浪漫的白日夢，Norah Jones在《Write About Love》這張專輯之中，還與他們合作一首〈Little Lou, Ugly Jack,Prophet John〉描述一個愛幻想的女孩，感嘆找不到像Lou Reed、Jack Kerouac、John Lennon一般的文藝青年。
Belle & Sebastian到目前為止總共出了八張專輯和一張精選輯，最早一張《Tigermilk》在1996年錄製時，只是同班同學們為了大學畢業所錄製的紀念品，歌詞描述了學校、人生與感情，沒想到推出之後大賣，使他們走上不同的人生道路。在1998年的《The Boy with The Arab Strap》更拿下全英音樂獎，2000年之後又發行了《Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk
Like A Peasant》(2000)、《Dear
Catastrophe Waitress》(2003)、《The
Life Pursuit》(2006)與《Write
about Love》(2010)四張專輯。
沒有想到在我居住的城市聽到Belle & Sebastian，蒙特婁一年到頭世界級的歌手來來去去，上次Belle
& Sebastian親臨此地是2006年，為了The
Life Pursuit專輯的宣傳，相隔七年，此次在國際爵士音樂節的邀請之下，在音樂節的最後一天演唱。
Belle & Sebastian不算是爵士樂團，但爵士音樂季除了爵士以外，也充滿各式各樣的音樂類型。Belle & Sebastian三年沒有推出新專輯，從過去的專輯之中挑選出15首作為今晚演出的曲目。
對於Belle & Sebastian來說，蒙特婁是Leonard Cohen的城市，他是音樂史上的傳奇，同時是歌手，也是詩人，在表演時也朗誦了一段Cohen的詩。
當晚所演奏的曲目之中，每一首似乎都琅琅上口，都曾在CD之中聽過，但是現場的魅力如此之大，使得每一首歌曲對我們而言都是新歌，都是一次新的感動。有時當我們對望時，眼眶都帶點感動的淚水，人生雖然充滿挑戰，幸好我們還有Belle & Sebastian！
